Move-out cleaning checklist
What to clean before you hand over the keys, room by room.
Why a move-out clean matters
At the end of a rental period, a landlord or agent often checks the condition of the home, and with a home you own, you'll want to hand it over neatly to the new occupant. A thorough move-out clean prevents disputes over the deposit and makes for a smooth handover.
Kitchen
Degrease the stovetop and the inside of the range hood, empty and clean the inside of cupboards and drawers, clean the fridge (including the rubber seals), and thoroughly wipe down the counter and the tiles behind the stove.
Bathroom and toilet
Remove limescale from taps, the shower wall and fixtures, clean the tile grout, and thoroughly descale the toilet, including under the rim.
Living room and bedrooms
Vacuum under furniture and behind cabinets, clean windows and frames on the inside, and wipe dust from light switches, door handles and skirting boards.
General points to check
Mop all floors as the final step, check corners and ceilings for cobwebs, and empty and clean the inside of closets and storage spaces.
Do it yourself or outsource it?
A move-out clean often takes a full day, right when you're busiest with the move itself. Hiring a cleaner for a one-off deep clean saves time and delivers a consistent result, including in corners you'd otherwise easily skip.
